I was reading about Salmonella in pet food on Itchmo: http://www.itchmo.com/pennsylvania-issues-salmonella-warning-on-dog-and-cat-food-2212 .
I looked up the Dept of Health link: http://www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp?Q=248419&A=190 .
If this stuff is so noxious, that we're not supposed to wash the bowls in the sink unless we do a whole decontamination procedure, why won't they tell us what brand(s) are involved?  When will the FDA reort this as a recall?  3 months from now?

I assume the dog food in question is the Ol Roy that has been recalled for salmonella. I don't know for sure though.

This is nothing new, they wouldn't tell us which brands were affected back when the recalls were happening. I DO NOT understand why??

I would think that this is the job of the FDA to inform the public which brand/s are dangerous to our health, but apparently not. I have never heard the explanation of why they don't inform us. If I did I could possibly read between the lines and figure it out.

Theories:

They don't want to disrupt big business??

They don't know if it is localized and don't have the scope of the problem?

They don't want to start a panic?

They don't want the stock market to panic?

They don't have absolute, positive, beyond the shadow of a doubt proof? (although they issue a warning)

Too many brands affected, not sure which one?

I just have stopped trusting all of them.

I don't feed commercial food anymore.  I just can't trust it.  I wish I could believe it was the previously recalled Ol' Roy.  But then, they'd be able to mention it by name.  So, does this mean more recalls are coming?  Or do we have to learn to live with salmonella contaminated pet food?  What next, instructions to boil it for 10 minutes before feeding?

We all need to build a special area to house pet foods and to feed pets in. When you enter the area we must remember to suit up. Put on gas mask, gloves protective white suit and rubber boots. Before you dress properly please be sure to wash your hands for 20 sec. Put food in sterilized bowl and feed pet. After pet is done eating put bowl in sterilizing dishwasher , along with all spoons ,cups etc.. When you leave the pet feeding area remove all safety clothing and put in special bin to be picked up by cleaners who will steilize it from all chemicals that might have contanimated it from feeding your pet!!! Wash your hands for 20 secs. Pat your pet on the head and go back to your living quarters taking your pet with you. Isn't it strange the FDA and Pa. dept agric. didn't mention the water dish?

I think you left out one very important step and that would be to of course sterilize your pet before petting. That could be accomplished by simply wiping down the pet with isopropyl alcohol, each time you wish to pet your companion. That way you wouldn't pick up any stray bacteria on the pets fur. Of course you could always just drink some alcohol and then you would be sterilized on the inside and the salmonella would then of course die inside you, eliminating the need for the above prescribed procedure. Yeah they didn't mention the water did they, hmmm
